Germany needs nurses, and many Indian nurses are already working in German hospitals and care homes. The route is clear, but it takes German and patience. Here is the official process.

What you need

  • A recognised nursing qualification. The authority in the state where you want to work compares your training with German training. Recognition is then valid in all of Germany.

If your training is only partly equivalent

This is common. You then choose between a knowledge test and an adaptation period in a German care setting. You can also skip the detailed comparison and go straight to the adaptation programme, which is faster to start but can take longer overall.

The recognition partnership

With a recognition partnership, you come to Germany with an employment contract and German at A2 level, work in the profession, and complete recognition with your employer's support. You need a nursing qualification of at least two years that is recognised in India.

Step by step from India

  1. Learn German early. Aim for B1, then B2. Read how much German you need.
  2. Prepare your documents. Degree, transcripts with subjects and hours, registration with your nursing council, experience letters.
  3. Apply for recognition or find a partnership employer. Hospitals and care providers often support the process and the costs.
  4. Apply for the visa. With your recognition notice or your partnership contract.
  5. Finish recognition in Germany. Knowledge test or adaptation period, then you work as a registered nurse.

A warning about agencies

Many agencies recruit nurses in India. Some are fair, others charge high fees or tie you to long contracts with penalties. Ask who pays the costs, read every contract and check my scam checklist before you pay anyone.
