- EU Blue Card holders can get permanent residence after 21 months with B1 German, or 27 months with A1.
- Skilled workers can apply after 3 years, graduates of German universities or vocational training after 2 years.
- Citizenship usually needs 5 years of residence; the 3 year fast track was repealed in 2025.
- Germany allows dual citizenship, but India does not, so Indians give up Indian citizenship when they naturalise.
For many people, the real goal is not the first job but a secure future: permanent residence, and later perhaps citizenship. Germany is one of the fastest countries in Europe for this, if you know the routes.
How long it takes, by route

What you need
- Pension contributions for the required number of months. Contributions from different employers add up.
- German: B1 for most routes; for the EU Blue Card, A1 for the 27 month route and B1 for the 21 month route.
- The Life in Germany test (Leben in Deutschland) on most routes.
- A secure income and enough living space, and no serious criminal record.
Citizenship
Since the 2024 reform, naturalisation usually needs 5 years of legal residence. The special 3 year fast track was repealed in 2025 (The Local). Germany now allows dual citizenship, but India does not, so Indians who become German give up their Indian citizenship. Many apply for an OCI card afterwards to keep easy access to India.
My advice
Start German before you move. Reaching B1 cuts the Blue Card route from 27 to 21 months, and it helps in every other part of life. Read how much German you need, and the EU Blue Card guide for the first step.
Common questions

After 21 months with B1 German, or after 27 months with A1 German.
Do I need to pass a test?
On most routes you need B1 German and the Life in Germany test.
