Key takeaways
  • All German visa sections abroad have been connected to the Consular Services Portal since 1 January 2025.
  • Long term visas for 28 purposes, including work, can be applied for online.
  • Schengen visas cannot yet be applied for online there.
  • You still apply at the mission responsible for where you live.

Once you have a signed contract, the visa is the next step. Germany has moved much of the national visa process online, which saves trips and paper.

What the portal is

The Consular Services Portal of the Federal Foreign Office lets you apply online for long term visas, including for employment, studies, vocational training and family reunification. All visa sections at German missions abroad have been connected since 1 January 2025, and visas for 28 purposes can be applied for online. Schengen visas are not yet available there (Federal Foreign Office).

Step by step

  1. Create an account on the portal. Use the official Federal Foreign Office website.
  2. Choose your visa purpose. For example EU Blue Card or skilled worker.
  3. Upload your documents. Passport, contract, degree, recognition proof, CV and the documents your mission lists.
  4. Submit to the right mission. The one responsible for where you live; don't apply to another mission.
  5. Attend the appointment if asked. Usually for fingerprints and to show originals.

Speed it up

Your employer can start the fast-track procedure for skilled workers at the local immigration office in Germany, which shortens the process once the pre approval is given. Ask your employer early.

Common mistakes

  • Applying to the wrong mission.
  • Missing recognition proof for the degree.
  • Unreadable scans.
  • Paying unofficial agents. Pay fees only to the mission or its official service provider.
