Key takeaways
  • Norway is in the EEA but not the EU, with its own skilled worker permit.
  • From 1 May 2026, where no collective agreement applies: NOK 545,400 a year with a bachelor's, NOK 624,700 with a master's.
  • Energy, engineering, maritime and tech hire internationally.
  • Norwegian matters for long-term growth, even in English speaking teams.

Norway has high salaries, strong worker protection and a booming energy and engineering sector. It is not in the EU, so the EU Blue Card does not apply, but the skilled worker permit is clear.

The skilled worker permit

You need a concrete job offer that requires your education, and pay and conditions in line with Norwegian standards. Where no collective agreement covers the job, the minimum salary from 1 May 2026 is NOK 545,400 a year with a bachelor's degree and NOK 624,700 with a master's degree (UDI via Relocation Norway). The official details are on UDI.

Who is hiring

  • Energy, including oil, gas and renewables.
  • Engineering, maritime and construction.
  • Software, data and fintech, mostly in Oslo.
  • Healthcare, where Norwegian is required.

Where to find jobs

  • arbeidsplassen, the job board of NAV, Norway's labour and welfare administration.
  • FINN.no, a large Norwegian marketplace with a busy jobs section.
  • LinkedIn and company career pages in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim.

Step by step from India

  1. Check your degree. Have your degree and transcripts ready, and check recognition early. Read my degree recognition guide; the same documents are useful everywhere in Europe.
  2. Rebuild your CV in the European format. Two pages, results, keywords from each ad. See the European CV guide.
  3. Search where Norwegian employers post. arbeidsplassen and FINN.no plus LinkedIn and company career pages. My local job portals guide explains why this matters.
  4. Contact 3 to 4 people per company. Hiring manager, a team member, the recruiter and someone with a shared background. See the networking guide.
  5. Get the contract first, then the permit. In most cases your employer starts or supports the permit process. Never pay anyone for a job offer.
  6. Resign in India only after approval. Wait until your permit or visa is granted before you hand in your notice.
