- Engineers use the lower Blue Card threshold of €45,934.20 in 2026.
- Most German engineering employers expect B1 to B2 German.
- Energy, electrification, automation and aerospace hire more than classic automotive right now.
- Get your degree checked early.
Germany is famous for mechanical engineering, so many engineers dream of working here. The truth: it is very possible, but most of these employers expect German, more than in IT.
The job market in Germany
Automotive is restructuring, so some areas hire less, while energy, electrification, defence, aerospace and automation hire more. Mid sized machinery companies in southern and western Germany employ many engineers.
How much German you need
For most mechanical engineering jobs at German companies, expect B1 to B2 German. Startups and international companies sometimes hire in English, especially in aerospace, space and robotics.
Work permit and recognition
Engineers count as a shortage group for the EU Blue Card, so the lower threshold of €45,934.20 a year applies in 2026. Your degree must be recognised or comparable; check it in anabin first.
What to show on your CV
- The products, systems and standards you worked with.
- Tools named in the ad, such as CAD and simulation software.
- Results: cost, weight, quality or time improvements.
- Your German level, clearly stated.
Where these jobs are
Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have the most jobs, followed by North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
For salary data by occupation and region, use the official Entgeltatlas of the Federal Employment Agency. For current English speaking jobs, see my live job board.
My plan for you
- Get your degree checked. anabin first, ZAB if needed.
- Reach B1 German. It doubles the number of employers you can apply to.
- Target growing sectors. Energy, electrification, automation, aerospace and defence.
- Apply to mid sized companies. Many are less known but hire steadily.
Common questions
Can mechanical engineers get jobs in Germany without German?
Some can, mostly at startups and international companies. German makes a big difference.
Do I need recognition as an engineer?
For the Blue Card your degree must be recognised or comparable. Using the protected title Ingenieur can need permission from the state engineering chamber.
