Key takeaways
  • Most European employers can't simply employ you in India; they need a legal setup there.
  • Common setups are freelancing or contracting, an employer of record, or an Indian entity of the company.
  • Remote roles are very competitive because applicants come from everywhere.
  • A remote job rarely turns into a European work permit by itself.

"Fully remote for a German company, from India" sounds perfect. It exists, but it is less common than people think, and it works differently from a normal job in Europe.

How companies hire people abroad

SetupHow it worksWhat to check
Freelancer or contractorYou invoice the companyYour own taxes and no employee benefits
Employer of recordA provider employs you in India for the companyContract terms and benefits
Indian entityYou join the company's Indian officeIndian salary levels

What is realistic

  • Remote roles get applicants from many countries, so competition is very high.
  • Senior IT, design and marketing profiles have the best chances.
  • Time zones matter: Central European working hours overlap well with India.

Does it lead to moving?

Sometimes a remote contractor is later hired in Europe, but a remote job is not a permit route by itself. If your goal is to live in Europe, focus on roles that come with a permit.

Tax and contract questions depend on your situation. Ask a tax adviser before you sign a contractor agreement.
