Key takeaways
  • German employers often ask for your salary expectation early, sometimes in the application itself.
  • Always give a gross annual range based on research, not a monthly net figure.
  • Make sure your number clears the visa threshold for your permit.
  • If the salary is fixed, negotiate the start date, relocation support, training or remote days.

Many Indian candidates accept the first number, afraid that negotiating will cost them the offer. In Germany, a polite, well researched negotiation is normal and respected.

"What is your salary expectation?"

This question often comes in the first call or even in the application form (Gehaltsvorstellung). Answer with a gross annual range, for example "between 58,000 and 64,000 euros gross a year, depending on the full package". Never answer with your Indian salary converted, and never with a monthly net amount.

How to find your range

  • Salary data on job boards and company review sites for your title and city.
  • Salary ranges published in some job ads.
  • Colleagues and contacts in the same field: ask about ranges, not personal salaries.
  • The visa threshold: in 2026 the EU Blue Card needs at least €50,700, or €45,934.20 in shortage jobs and IT (The Local).

How to negotiate

  1. Thank them and show enthusiasm. Make it clear you want the job.
  2. Ask for time. One or two days to review the offer is normal.
  3. Give one clear counter offer. Based on your research and the value you bring.
  4. Negotiate the package if salary is fixed. Relocation support, a signing bonus, training budget, home office days or an earlier review.
  5. Get everything in writing. Then check the contract with my contract checklist.

What never to say

  • "I will take anything." It lowers the offer and your credibility.
  • An ultimatum, unless you truly have a better offer.
  • Personal reasons like loans or rent as the main argument.

Common questions

Is it normal to negotiate salary in Germany?

Yes, especially for experienced roles. Keep it polite and based on research.

Should I say my salary in monthly or yearly terms?

Yearly gross. That is how German employers compare.

What if the offer is below the Blue Card threshold?

Tell the employer early. Many will adjust, because otherwise you can't get the permit.
