Key takeaways
  • Freshers rarely get a skilled job in Europe directly from India; employers expect experience or a European degree.
  • The most common route is a master's in Germany with working student jobs, then a full-time job.
  • Ausbildung is a paid route that suits freshers ready to learn German.
  • Freshers with a degree can try the Opportunity Card, but the job search is hard without experience or German.

I get this message every week: "I just graduated in India. Can I get a job in Europe?" The honest answer: it is possible, but rarely directly. European employers usually hire freshers who studied in Europe or already speak the language. Here are the 4 routes that work.

Route 1: a master's in Germany

This is the route I took. You study, work as a working student, write your thesis with a company if possible, and use the 18 month job search permit after graduating. Start with free universities and how to apply.

Route 2: Ausbildung

Paid vocational training in nursing, IT, hospitality, logistics or trades, with a legal minimum of €724 a month in the first year for training starting in 2026. Read the Ausbildung guide.

Route 3: the Opportunity Card

A job search visa for skilled workers. Freshers with a recognised degree can qualify, but without experience or German the search is hard. Read my Opportunity Card guide before you spend your savings.

Route 4: a direct job offer

Possible in some IT, research and engineering niches, especially with strong internships, projects or rare skills. Build a European style CV and target English speaking teams: English speaking jobs.

What to do this month

  1. Pick one route. Not all four at once.
  2. Start German. Even A1 helps everywhere. Read how much German you need.
  3. Build your CV and LinkedIn. CV guide and LinkedIn checklist.

Common questions

Can freshers get jobs in Germany from India?

It is possible but rare. Most freshers get there through a master's in Germany, an Ausbildung or the Opportunity Card.

Which European country is best for freshers?

Germany, because of low tuition, working student jobs and the 18 month job search permit after graduation.

Do I need German as a fresher?

For English master's programmes no, but for jobs it makes a big difference, especially outside IT.
