- Marketing in Germany works in English mainly for global and EMEA roles.
- Marketing for German customers needs German.
- Specialists get hired faster than generalists.
- Show results with numbers.
This is my own field. I started in Germany as a working student in social media, moved into a full time marketing role and now head digital marketing at a German tech company. So I can tell you honestly: marketing in Germany is very possible in English, but only in the right companies.
The job market in Germany
International companies, tech companies and startups hire marketers for performance marketing, SEO, content, CRM and product marketing, often for several markets. Marketing for the German market is mostly done in German.
How much German you need
For global or EMEA marketing, English is often enough. For anything that speaks to German customers, such as content, PR and local campaigns, German at C1 is expected.
Work permit and recognition
The EU Blue Card needs at least €50,700 a year in 2026 with a recognised degree. Without the Blue Card, a skilled worker permit or the experience route can work. Marketing is not a regulated profession.
What to show on your CV
- Numbers: budgets, channels, leads, revenue, cost per acquisition.
- The tools in the ad: analytics, ads platforms, CRM and automation.
- Markets and languages you have worked in.
- A short portfolio or case study link.
Where these jobs are
Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne have the most marketing roles in English, mostly at tech and e-commerce companies.

My plan for you
- Pick a specialty. Performance, SEO, CRM or product marketing; generalists struggle more.
- Show results with numbers. Recruiters scan for them.
- Target global roles. Those are the ones in English.
- Consider a Werkstudent role if you study here. That is exactly how I started.
